University of Alaska Museum of the North – Fairbanks

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Explore the University of Alaska Museum of the North – Fairbanks. Did you know that Alaska is the resting place for many of the migratory birds of the world? Here shorebirds and waterfowl eat and rest before continuing their journey. Some of these birds are eiders, geese, swans, jaegers, and dunlins.

Speaking of travel you will be able to see some of the displays showcasing the 87th Army Corps of Engineers that worked on the Alaska Highway during WWII. This all Black regiment built the Richardson Highway, Tok Cutoff, and the Alcan Highway from Delta to the Canadian border.

The museum suggests that you plan to spend at least 3 hours on your visit, but with so much to see and so much to learn you will probably want to spend a lot more time than that going from exhibit to exhibit. Maybe you will want to return time after time to see the changing displays and learn something new each time you go.

Enjoy Everything That New York Vacation Tours Have To Offer From A Red Double Decker Bus Tour To A New York Helicopter Tour

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

There are a number of different options for New York City Tour which will give you different perspectives of how the city is laid out and the different important parts of the city. You can take a helicopter tour or a Double Decker bus tour for a couple of the options. Taking the New York City tours will help you decide what you want to go back and see on your own when the tour is over.

Another neat option is to take a boat tour around the city. The view from the water is totally different than it is from the sky or from the bus. You get a perspective of just how relatively small the land mass is that is home to so many people.

In the Helicopter Tour you will see how the city developed into the different sections that is has with the 5 boroughs. The array of areas that are distinctly reminiscent of the “old country” and the new, shiny sky scrapers that show off the architecture of the 20th and 21st centuries.

While you are flying over the former location of the Twin Towers you will be sure to remember the wickedness and insanity of the terrorists that had decided to try to grab headlines and make a statement about how powerful they were with the mass murder of thousands of people. The effect of this tragedy is that the American people pulled together, became stronger and assisted those that were suffering in a manner that had certainly matched the strongest and most loving of nations on earth.

Taking the Double Decker bus gives you the opportunity to see such places as Wall Street, China Town, the architectural diversity of the city and much more. While looking at Wall Street you will see that the area isn’t very big but the knowledge that billions of dollars flow through the center everyday is really quite a thought. The insignias over the doorways of these building all have a story to tell which may be a great inspiration to do some research once your tour is over.

On your riverboat tour you will have a close up look at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. These symbols of freedom and hope have welcomed millions to the shores of the United States over the years and have more stories to tell than even the most complete history books hold.

Earning A Living Down Under

1 April, 2008

Skilled South Africans are being transferred or head-hunted, writes Linda Vergnani.
Turn on the radio in Australia and you will hear the distinctive Afrikaans accent of Marius Kloppers who, as CEO of BHP Billiton, is spearheading the A147-billion takeover bid of BHP Billiton.

Kloppers is one of the SA corporate superstars who have lit up the Australian and international business firmament. Among the brightest is Gail Kelly, the new CEO of Westpac. Her earnings could top A12-million per year, making her the most highly paid businesswoman in Australia.
Kelly, who emigrated to the country with her family in 1997, is listed among the 50 most powerful women in global business by Fortune magazine.

Other leading business migrants include Giam Swiegers, CEO of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu in Australia, and Jonathan Pinshaw, chairman of The Just Group.
Australia’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship lists South Africa as one of the top 10 countries when it comes to gaining citizenship in terms of Australia’s business-skills migration programme. According to the department, 3996 South Africans settled permanently in Australia in the past two years. Refer to australia migration for more information

In addition, there were more than 7800 South Africans in Australia on temporary 457 business visas by June 2007.

Although the average weekly earning in Australia were A1162 in 2007, starting over can be tough for business migrants. The cost of living in major cities such as Sydney can be exceptionally high and the mortgage on a modest house can easily exceed A1000 a week.

Craig Badings, director and head of corporate public relations at Savage & Partners, moved to Australia in 2003 with his teacher wife and two young children. He says unless South Africans are transferred to Australia or headhunted, they have to be prepared to “take a few backward steps” in their career and salary.

Badings, who founded Rainmaker Public Relations and was previously MD of Cape Town Citigate, initially took a role as account director in a public relations firm in Melbourne.
“You come here with all this experience but none of the Australian market, and you have to reinvent yourself,” he said. Badings likens it to a “mental enema”, which forces migrants to refocus their skills. Refer to new zealand migration for more information

Now based in Sydney, which he loves, Badings says: “You’ve got to embrace Australian ways because South Africans are generally perceived as quite aggressive and arrogant.”
Badings says South Africans who pick up the “nuances around the boardroom table” and adapt to Australians’ polite, consensus approach to business will get ahead quicker .

Evan Petrelis, who was the 2007 New South Wales president of the Australia Africa Business Council, remarks that the integration of highly educated South African immigrants into the Australian workplace is on the whole excellent.

“While the ‘direct’ or sometimes even confrontational approach of some South Africans on occasion lands them in hot water, South Africans are generally respected and well regarded in the Australian business community as astute, entrepreneurial and hard- working,” he said.
Expatriate South Africans have “typically thrived in professional sectors, particularly accounting, law and finance”, and there are also a number of high-profile former South Africans leading blue-chip retail organisations.

Petrelis, who moved from London to Australia three years ago, notes that while most expatriate South Africans initially find jobs with organisations, many “move on to take advantage of Australia’s favourable business start-up incentives and go on to establish successful small businesses in a number of fields.

How Not To Shell Out More And Experience The Most Of Your Australian Tourist Visa

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

Obtaining an Australian visa is almost a dream come true for most persons who wish to see its genuine beauty. This amazing country is filled with green and flourishing rainforests, amazing beaches, unique wildlife, and excellent hospitality. No wonder why many individuals have been dreaming of going to this location even though it is merely for recreation.

Whether you have your Australian tourist visa or an Australian working holiday visa, you will definitely value the moment you get it because this will be your gateway to a remarkable vacation you will never forget.

However, even though you have the means of experiencing a luxurious holiday escapade to this country, it is vital that you reserve an economical holiday package in advance to save you time and cash. You could possibly choose to work while on vacation if you think you have already spread out your resources to the boundary, but this is just possible if you have an Australian working holiday visa.

What if you just have an Australian tourist visa? What will you do to compensate the expenses when traveling to this country? That’s the time you need to work out and choose some cheap holiday packages. But before you achieve this, you have to think about the list below first:

1. Start with your homework

Research on information you need to plan out your cheap holiday getaway to Australia. The first thing you need to work on is your accommodation. Finding a cheap accommodation in Australia is not actually a bad idea since the place can give you a dozen of affordable hotels without batting an eyelash. However, you really need to work on your research first because not all cheap hotel accommodations can give you the amenities or service you need.

2. When to go

You should also consider the best time of the year when traveling to this country. If you are going to consider the season, the northern and southern hemisphere is totally opposite. For instance, if it is winter in the northern hemisphere, then expect a summer season in the southern part. If you go for summer, try booking a vacation between November and March. If you book between July and August, you can expect a colder climate during that time.

Also, try to book flights beginning on the middle of April to late August since airfares in Australia are at its cheapest during these times of the year. With this, you can easily visit the Great Barrier Reef and the Red Centre without stretching your budget.

Try not to book during holidays too, especially during summer vacations which will start from December to January. Most of the holiday spots and hotels are fully booked.

Taking into account these things will surely allow you to reserve an expensive holiday package to Australia.

Why Are Investors Buying Land In Brazil

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

The land and property investment market in Brazil is very attractive at the moment.

The trend is partly down to the combination of good and sustainable economic growth, low inflation, stable currency, oil self-sufficiency, increased exposure to the international markets, significant FDI and thriving tourism which have all attracted substantial investments into Brazil’s property & land investment market with the influx increasing under the prevailing favourable conditions.

The market is being driven by the following other factors

Low cost labour and building materials.

Under market value of land for sale in Brazil in certain areas of the country with very good capital growth predictions.

The Brazilian government are actively encouraging foreign investment with incentives including a simplified buying procedure, 100% foreign land and property ownership, a registration process that ensures a free and clear title, low taxes and fees associated with purchasing and real estate ownership[ and no restrictions over the transfer of profits or capital.

No visa requirements for most Europeans for visits of up to 6 months.

a surge in the number of tourists with over 10 million short term tourists expected in 2008 ( Embratur the Brazilian Tourist Authority).

Over the past few years over R$ 1.7 billion (US$1.1 billion) was invested by The Ministry of Tourism in tourism related projects and infrastructure and they are planning to invest more.

The areas which are seeing the most activity of people investing in Brazil land is the northeast of the Brazil in and around the cities of Natal the capital city of the northern state of Rio Grande do Norte and Fortaleza which is the capital of Ceará.

The Whales At Los Cabos

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

The beach and the mountains have always been my favorite destination places. I’ve traveled to many places just to see beaches from all over the world. Last January, my good friends Ardie and Kyle invited me to join them for their trip to Los Cabos. Since I’ve been to many beaches before, I guessed it was nothing special but just the usual beach with hotel resorts and common activities. Of course I still wanted to enjoy a good vacation but there wasn’t really much excitement on my part. But that perception changed upon reaching Los Cabos.

Although still burdened with heavy bags, we headed for the beach instead of our reserved accommodations. Our contact and guide Julio, insisted that we go straight to the beach. I was actually tired and wanted to settle first in the hotel room but I had no choice. Upon reaching the beach, there were a lot of people on the shore and several boats on the waters. We moved in for a closer look, and there they were! There was a group or family of gray whales just roaming around near the shore unafraid of humans. Some of the boats were so near to them but they seem unbothered. It was the first time I saw actual whales and seeing them near the shore is just a truly magnificent sight. It was barely an hour since I arrived at Los Cabos Mexico and I thought then I would enjoy the place. I was right to come along; well actually, my friends were because they insisted that I join them.

After that brief moment by the beach, we headed off to a hotel in Los Cabos where we unpacked our things and settled for awhile. Although we were settled in a luxurious hotel, what ran in my mind was going back to the beach to ride a boat to get near the whales. Kyle looked at me with a grin thinking how I quickly had a change of heart. After a few minutes we headed back to the beach where there were some boats which you could rent for a few hours. Without much hesitation, we took one and rowed our way to where the other boats were, close to the whales. And there I was, a few feet from these large amazing animals. The splashes the whales made on the waters got us all wet and enormous as they may seem, you could feel that they are actually gentle creatures. I was asking myself why I never bothered to visit the place before although I’ve heard so much about it from others. Now, I’m planning to go back to Los Cabos after a month, but this time, I’ll do it on my own. I hope I meet someone who has excited me like the whales did.

Here is a list of places I when to check the whales up close:

  • Puerto San Carlos
  • Isla Santa Margarita
  • Punta Palmilla

Los Cabos is a famous destination point with your not so usual attractions. Imagine sharing the waters with whales? The people, food and the nightlife were amazing as well. I think the place is pleasurably addictive and I am so glad I joined my friends.
