Locating A USA Passport Office Is An Easy Task
Wednesday, March 10th, 2010Anyone that is looking to take an international trip better get ready to get in line at their local American passport office if they don’t already have a passport. Finding an office is not difficult, especially with the help of the Internet. A surprise for many is that their local post office also serves as a passport processing center.
The one thing that everyone can rest assured of is that there are no shortcuts when it comes to passport applications, especially for first time passport applicants. The forms all have to be filled out and all the right documentation must be included. This one document is how the government tracks who is coming and who is going and they make sure that everything is in line before that little blue book gets issued.
This is the only way the government has to track people that are coming in and out of the country so they make sure that it is very thorough. With so many rules in place about national security and international travel, it is no wonder that the government wants anyone that is getting their first passport to go through the process in person. Even though the process can take up some time, the government does try and make it as simple as possible.
In many cases, the office is conveniently located at the local post office. They are also sometimes in other local government offices, libraries and county clerk offices. It will all depend on the area, but the can easily be found by checking online. If an international trip is on the horizon, start looking around to see how close the local office actually is.
Some of these offices have on site passport photo centers. However, these photo centers are not universal. To be safe, an applicant should always bring passport photos to the office. Normally photo centers are only available at offices that offer expedited services. To check for an office with a photo center in a given region, go on the State Department website and select “photo on-site” in the search filter on the zip-code oriented passport center search page.
Sometimes people have a need to go to one of the regional passport offices. Normally people that need a passport in less than two weeks will have to go to one of the regional offices. These offices are located in major metropolitan cities. Regional offices are located in cities like New York, Dallas, Miami, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and others. A full list of regional centers can be found on the State Department website.
Passport renewals do not need to be filed in person, so anyone renewing a passport does not need to go to a passport center. However, replacing a lost passport is treated like applying for a new passport, so anyone that has lost a passport will need to find a passport center. Passport centers are usually least crowded mid-morning.
Many people think that digital age should be able to make this process easy, but with border security on the line, a personal appearance at the local passport office must still be made when applying for a first time US passport. The laws are there for very good reason and while it may be a small inconvenience, we all know that deep down we are happy these laws are in place. If they were not there, we would have more problems than we already do with illegal immigrants coming into the country.
