How to Travel Well – from a Fellow Traveller

Foreign cultures, the fun of a new adventure, different cuisines, sightseeing and meeting new people are all some of the joys of travel.

Traveling can be one of the most exciting times of your life or a terrible time depending on how prepared you are for your holiday spot. It is really important to do as much background reading as you can before setting off for your destination. Some countries require visas for some visitors and very specific inoculations as a condition of visiting.

You really need to inform yourself and not just rely on a travel agent or friends because the requirements can change from time to time. I once knew a friend traveling to Vietnam and the travel agent never told on the next flight back home. This was a terrible blow and one that could have not happened.

If you think that the world economic recession has made travel not realisticacquire a bargain airline ticket of destinations here and abroad. In fact the manual “My Airfare Secrets” will enlighten you to ways of getting bargains.

Traveling without too much luggage is one aspect of traveling that I am still not a master of. I have however learnt to buy and travel with cashmere and pashmina to not so hot countries, as these yarns are so well insulating and at the same time very easy to pack. Always ensure that you have layers then you will be equipped for any change in temperature and remember to pack comfortable footwear. I don’t leave home without a small mag lite torch and of course take your soap, shampoo and such because you may not get the brands you like in the country you are traveling to.

Check out the safety of the local water before drinking it, as you may need to buy clean water and be careful with local dishes and at the same time enjoy the experience of enjoying new dishes and flavors wherever you are. Best to get advise from a local or go to a place where you can see people relishing the food.

Make sure your valuable items are secure and pay for as much as you can before leaving home. Take enough cash and sources of money to bring home some special gifts for your loved ones.

Last and certainly not least do have respect for the local customs including the styles of dress needed and behavior particularly if you are visiting any religious sites or places of worship.

OK, fasten your seat belt and Bon Voyage!
